Overview

Cloudflare Workers is a serverless platform that runs code in Cloudflare data centers around the world. It uses V8 isolates rather than containers, which keeps cold starts very short.

Developers use Workers for APIs, full-stack web apps, request routing and middleware, and background jobs. It pairs with Cloudflare storage products such as KV, D1 (SQLite), R2 (object storage) and Durable Objects for stateful workloads.

Key features

  • Edge executionCode runs close to users across Cloudflare's global network.
  • Storage bindingsAccess KV, D1, R2 and Durable Objects directly from Worker code.
  • Static assetsServe full-stack apps with front-end assets and server logic in one deployment.
  • Queues and Cron TriggersRun scheduled jobs and process messages asynchronously.
  • Wrangler CLIDevelop locally, configure bindings and deploy from the command line.

Best for

  • Developers building low-latency APIs and middleware
  • Teams already using Cloudflare for DNS and CDN
  • Cost-sensitive projects that benefit from request-based pricing

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Integrated storage and queue products reduce extra vendors
  • Pricing is competitive for request-heavy workloads

Cons

  • Runtime is not full Node.js, so some packages need compatibility flags or alternatives
  • Memory and CPU limits constrain heavy compute tasks
  • Platform-specific APIs can increase lock-in
